S-PLUS: Working with Big Data, Part 1

Presented: Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Speaker: Peter Shaw, Senior Consultant, Insightful Corporation

In this three part series Peter Shaw will spotlight the new suite of S-PLUS Big Data objects and functions now available in S-PLUS Enterprise Developer 7.

Users who are new to the Big Data capabilities of S-PLUS will learn how to rapidly apply these methods to their own data sets. These new functions can be applied both to Big Data and "regular" S-PLUS objects, so users can immediately begin incorporating the functions into their existing scripts and functions.

Part one of this three-part web cast series will

  • Introduce Big Data objects using a case history
  • Highlight the uniform syntax of the new functions, and
  • Walk through some of the most useful methods for manipulating and examining big data objects.

We will examine specific instances of where memory "bottlenecks" have occurred in older scripts when applied to large data sets, and will demonstrate how to convert these scripts to use the new Big Data functions, a portion at a time.

Future Web casts in this Big Data series will focus on graphics, modeling, and some advanced methods.

Intended audience: Anyone who uses S-PLUS and wants to learn more.
