S-PLUS® 7—Delivering the Power of Predictive Analytics Across the Enterprise

S-PLUS 7.0 is a major new update to the S-PLUS product family, and was designed to enable statisticians to create targeted statistical applications with large data sets that can be easily deployed to business users, researchers, analysts and other end users who do not have special expertise in statistical methods.

For statisticians performing data analysis or creating statistical applications, S-PLUS 7.0 is available in two editions: S-PLUS 7.0 Professional Developer (which updates S-PLUS 6.2 Professional) and the new flagship of the S-PLUS Product Family, S-PLUS 7.0 Enterprise Developer.

NEW FEATURES IN S-PLUS 7.0 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPER AND S-PLUS 7.0 ENTERPRISE DEVELOPER

New statistical methods: A new library for correlated data analysis provides new statistical methods, including Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM) and Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE). New functions are available for multiple comparisons tests for mixed-effects model, and mixed-effects Cox models.

New S language capabilities: The timeSeries object class has been enhanced to add additional column-wise summary operations, add additional selection options, and add new methods for many functions. Many new utility functions have been added.

New graphical capabilities: Trellis graphics functions have been enhanced to add new capabilities for axis labeling and offer new color schemes. S-PLUS Graphlets™ now offer high-quality printing and additional display and interaction capabilities.

The S-PLUS Workbench: An Integrated Development Environment
Built on the power and flexibility of the S programming language, a completely new integrated development environment for S-PLUS Enterprise Developer is designed to increase programmer productivity by offering:

  • A cross-platform integrated development environment for S programmers
  • A smart code editor with indentation and color highlighting
  • A code outline browser, with user-customizable "watch functions"
  • The ability to view objects, search path, and command history
  • Source code evaluation and error detection

Pipeline Architecture: Scale S-PLUS to Gigabyte-Class Data Sets
S-PLUS 7 Enterprise Developer introduces a new pipeline architecture by making it possible to process gigabyte-sized data sets, even on machines with modest amounts of RAM. With the new pipeline architecture in S-PLUS Enterprise Developer, S-PLUS programmers can import or create extremely large data objects by using out-of-memory processing techniques. Instead of holding a large data set entirely in memory, the pipeline architecture caches the data file on disk and uses specialized streaming algorithms to process the data, reading only a small portion of the data into memory at a time.

S-PLUS 7 Enterprise Developer includes new data types for dealing with very large data objects, and adds new scalable algorithms that enable developers to read, manipulate, and analyze these very large data sets.
Benefits of the new pipeline architecture include the ability to:

  • Read, manipulate, and analyze multi-gigabyte data frames, time series, and vectors
  • Use familiar S programming techniques, functions, and operators
