You can check the version you have by typing version at the S-PLUS command line. Information on the previous release is also available.

GETTING STARTED

Instructions on how to install S-PLUS 8.0 can be found on the CD-ROM in the file INSTALL.TXT. S-PLUS 8.0 can be installed alongside an existing installation of S-PLUS 7.0 or earlier. It is not necessary to uninstall any previous version of S-PLUS.

S-PLUS 8 offers a number of new features and enhancements to existing features including:

• S-PLUS Package System: This feature provides statistical developers a convenient framework for creating and distributing libraries for S-PLUS.
  
• Graphics Enhancements: New command-line graphics functionality. The new features include support for named colors (for example, col="red"), alternative color specification models, color palettes, and vectorized parameters for drawing points, lines, and text.
• S-PLUS Workbench Debugger: Allows users to debug S-PLUS code from within the Eclipse Workbench. This application has modern debugging tools like step debugging and breakpoints.

Before you start using S-PLUS, we suggest reading the Getting Started Guide. For new users, it includes a step-by-step tutorial on reading, visualizing and analyzing data in S-PLUS 8.0.

The Getting Started Guide was included with your copy of S-PLUS, and can be found in the doc subdirectory of the S-PLUS installation directory as the file getstart.pdf. You can find the location of the S-PLUS installation directory by typing Splus8 SHOME at the shell prompt.
