If you are installing on a server that has a previous version of S-PLUS Enterprise Server, S-PLUS Server, or StatServer installed, you must uninstall the older version before installing this edition. For server migration, see the S-PLUS 7 Installation and Administration Guide section "Migrating from an Existing Copy of S-PLUS Server." You can also find useful information in the section below titled, "PORTING APPLICATIONS FROM PREVIOUS INSTALLATIONS OF S-PLUS ENTERPRISE SERVER." You must have Administrative privileges to install S-PLUS Enterprise Server. The following section describes installing S-PLUS, the S-PLUS Enterprise Server, and the S-PLUS Enterprise Server Client: 1) Place the CD in the CD-ROM drive. The S-PLUS Enterprise Server Master Setup screen should appear. 2) Install S-PLUS, providing the serial number when prompted. The serial number is located on the S-PLUS Enterprise Server CD-ROM case. 3) Obtain a license file for S-PLUS. In most cases, you can get the file by launching S-PLUS to start the Insightful License Fulfillment Wizard. You can also get a license file at http://keys.insightful.com. For more information, see the S-PLUS 7 Installation and Administration Guide. For assistance, contact Insightful Technical Support. 4) Install the S-PLUS Enterprise Server from the S-PLUS Enterprise Server Master Setup screen. Notes: * Because Windows allows varying access to protected files and services, the user installing and uninstalling S-PLUS Enterprise Server must have administrative privileges. * Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, and Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition allow specially-compiled applications to address up to 3GB of RAM, rather than the standard Windows limit of 2GB. You can enable this feature by adding the /3GB flag to the line identifying the default operating system in the system boot.ini file. (The S-PLUS Enterprise Server installer does not modify the boot.ini file during installation. To use the 3GB feature, you must add the flag by editing the boot.ini file. After you modify the boot.ini file, you must restart the computer before using the 3GB feature. For assistance, please contact Insightful Technical Support. ====================================================================== CLIENT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ====================================================================== The client installation is included as part of the S-PLUS Enterprise Server installation, so it should ONLY be done on a computer in which the S-PLUS Enterprise Server is NOT installed. Also, the user must have administrative privileges to install the client. Install the client from the S-PLUS Enterprise Server Master Setup screen. Note: Your S-PLUS Enterprise Server license does not allow you to install copies of S-PLUS on client computers. Any such copies of S-PLUS must be licensed separately. ====================================================================== WHAT'S NEW ====================================================================== 1) Integration of S-PLUS 7.0.2 updated June 2005 S-PLUS 7 is a major new release of the S-PLUS Product Family, with a focus on providing a robust environment for creating statistical applications applied to very large data sets. S-PLUS 7.0.2 is a point release, providing fixes to bugs discovered after the release of S-PLUS 7. S-PLUS 7 changes include: + bigdata library + S-PLUS Workbench developer tools + New correlatedData library + Improvements to timeSeries objects + Improved GUI responsiveness + Support for 4GT RAM tuning + FLEXnet license management system + Various new functions and other minor new capabilities There are also a number of enhancements to existing functions and improvements to quality in several areas. 2) S-PLUS Enterprise Server + Fixed bugs + Implemented several user requested enhancements + Updated and improved S-PLUS Enterprise Server documentation + Licensed under the FLEXnet license management system ======================================================================= KNOWN ISSUES ======================================================================= For troubleshooting help, see the Troubleshooting Guide in the S-PLUS 7 Installation and Administration Guide. 1) S-PLUS Enterprise Server cannot be installed on a computer with a previous edition of S-PLUS Enterprise Server, S-PLUS Server or StatServer. 2) You must close S-PLUS and/or stop the S-PLUS Server Analytic Service before installing S-PLUS 7.0.2. 3) After you install S-PLUS and before you install S-PLUS Enterprise Server for Windows, you must obtain a license file for S-PLUS by running the Insightful License fulfillment Wizard, or by visiting http://keys.insightful.com. 4) To view the S-PLUS and S-PLUS Enterprise Server documentation, you must have installed Adobe Acrobat Reader. To obtain a copy, visit http://www.adobe.com. 5) Hyperthreading is a technology included in many Intel CPUs to let a single physical CPU appear to the operating system as multiple CPUs. This feature can be useful when the computer is running a compute-intensive application, such as S-PLUS, and an application such as Word; however, hyperthreading reduces performance when the computer is running multiple compute-intensive applications, such as the pool of S-PLUS processes used by S-PLUS Enterprise Server. We recommend that you disable hyperthreading when you use S-PLUS Enterprise Server. 6) Analytics cannot use mapped drives to access files, because the service runs as LocalSystem account user. To use UNC paths, create a user account with administrative privileges on the server and access privileges to the network paths of interest. Creating these accounts correctly can be difficult. For assistance, we recommend you contact Insightful Technical Support. 7) When you set purging criteria, the S-PLUS Enterprise Server does not purge the request table. The S-PLUS Enterprise Server administrator must periodically purge the database using the administrative features in the Web tools. (Click Delete Requests link on Administer S-PLUS Enterprise Server page.) 8) After you create an analytic, the number of arguments that you can pass to the analytic cannot be decreased using the analytic wizards. If you want to decrease the number of input arguments passed to an analytic, you must create a new analytic. 9) A single analytic cannot output to both a database and data files. ======================================================================= PORTING APPLICATIONS FROM PREVIOUS INSTALLATIONS OF S-PLUS ENTERPRISE SERVER ======================================================================= The following is the suggested procedure for porting applications from a previous installation of S-PLUS Enterprise Server, S-PLUS Server, or StatServer. It is not possible to install S-PLUS Enterprise Server on a computer with a previous edition. You must uninstall the previous edition. To migrate your old analytics and files from your existing copy of S-PLUS Enterprise Server to the new version, you must create a backup of the following files and directories: * sshome\ServerFiles\aos6.db or aos.db (where sshome is the location of your server files): This is the internal Adaptive Server Anywhere database that stores the analytics. * sshome\wwwroot\aocwiz: Any analytics you create via the Web wizards are stored in their own subdirectories here. * sshome\wwwroot\aoclientwiz: Any Web pages you create using the Create User Interface Wizard are stored here. Also, if you wish to maintain the list of links to these Web pages, make a backup of toc.htm. * Make backups of any custom Web pages, such as custom copies of front-end scripts, or insertATROdyn scripts. * Make backups of any custom scripts or customized files associated with your previous edition. * If you changed sshome\SplusWin\sshome6 (such as modifying .First or changing some of the S-PLUS Enterprise Server internal S-PLUS functions), make a backup copy of these functions. These functions need to be recreated after installation. After the new installation is complete, move the files and directories from the above backup to the corresponding locations in the new installation directories. If you need to revert to the old version, we recommend that you uninstall the new version, reinstall the old version, and then restore the files and directories above to their corresponding locations.
